View Full Version : StarScan interest on 12/13 Toys for Tots run?

cadzilla74

I had a few folks ask about the StarScan on dyno-day and I also believe Mecha expressed interest.

The unit is now on semi-permanent loan to a shop but I can get it with some advanced notice. So I was thinking of arranging to bring it to the Toys for Tots run.

What I need to know is, who needs it? Make, model, year of car? What do you hope to achieve?

I have to download the correct files for each model and year of vehicle and put them on a USB thumb-drive to be able to apply any updates to vehicles. I don't need any special files to set things like Daytime Driving lights or Fogs on with High Beams or EVIC CCN updates. Those are pretty much universal to the base operating system of the unit.

OK here's the list so far ...

1. 07 Charger Daytona - TCM update
2. 05 Magnum RT - TCM and ECM updates
3. 07 Mag SXT - Full Monty
4. 08 RT and SRT - any updates available will be provided
5. 05 300C - TCM and ECM

Hey, Art. `07 daytona.....is there an update for the trans flash? And will it still be useful if I`m running the predator?

cadzilla74
11-22-2008, 08:41 PM
Hi Jeff. Yes, it will be very useful if you are not running the latest TCM firmware already. We will see that as soon as the unit is attached to the car (Unless the Predator can read it? I'm not familiar with the Predator's capabilities. The Flashpaq I have can show me current TCM and ECM versions.) Let me know if you can see what version you already have and I can tell if it's the most current. You will need to use the Predator to return to stock before any changes can be applied. The latest Chrysler update for TCM for NAG1 is pretty nice, very aggressive shifts. With the Flashpaq reapplied on top of that on mine both upshifts and downshifts are very firm and crisp.

Mine has not been updated and I`m sure updates have came out since I bought my car. Bring it and we`ll use it on my car. Thanks, Art.

I have an '05 ..... I think I really need SOMETHING done.

2005 Dodge Magnum RT ..... build date 03/05.

how's that police flash? I just don't know what to get.

11-22-2008, 08:48 PM
OK guys, I'm quite sure I'll be there and I'll have the unit ... of course I could get run over by a reindeer or something between then and now.

Like Jeff has done, please make sure you provide me some info or I might not be able to update your car.

So far I've got TCM for 07 Charger Daytona ... consider it downloaded as of now.

cadzilla74

Camo ... not sure about if there are updates. But I'm sure there may be. If someone with a Predator can please fill in my lack of knowledge, can it show the current version of files on your car? That info is really important to know if possible. There is limited space on the thumb drive for files.

Gonzo ... the police package update is not necessarily the way to go and does not always install correctly. I notice your Sig does not list a tuner. If you are truly Stock tuned I will make sure you get TCM and ECM updates. It did wonders for my '05 Mag RT compared to the "off the dealer lot" settings it came with. Bear in mind though, this is NOT a tuner! It simply applies the latest versions of updates Chrysler made over time and can only apply the ones your car is capable of reading and storing. For a "cheap" power adder grab a used Flashpaq. Saw one on LXF 2 days ago for $100. Set it for 91 octane tune. Get rid of top-speed governor. Dial in your exact tire and wheel size. This may be the best unit still for the NAG1 as far as tranny adjustments are concerned. (Although rumor has it Diablo is getting close to putting out updates to improve what the Predator does now.)

I guess the EVIC would tell me right? When ever I turn it on, it tells me the Software Version, and Date.

cadzilla74
11-22-2008, 09:07 PM
I'll dig around and see what I can find for the 08's ... my guess is the only thing you guys or gals would need would be any fixes there are TSB's for or changes to settings on various systems in the car like lights that you may want for personal reasons.

CamoCharger
11-22-2008, 09:08 PM
Is there a way to turn ALL the lights on (HIGHS, LOWS, and FOGS) I think it would make a cool pic, lol.

cadzilla74
11-22-2008, 09:08 PM
The EVIC is telling you the CCN version which is the software version for your instrument cluster and the EVIC itself. That can also be updated if needed. But that's not the TCM or ECM number.

GONZOsMAGNUM

Yes, I have mine set to fogs on with high beams which means everything is on at once. A cop having a really bad day could ticket you for it. But the one time I was asked about it I said "that's how the car came new, maybe it's a Canadian thing".

^^^ Not at all Camo and don't beat yourself up. Very few people can tell you what their computers are up to on their cars and yet the darned things are running the whole show just about. I'm happy to help out ... and I ask plenty of "hmmm, WTF is he thinkin" questions myself around here ... lol ... ask anybody.

That's the whole point of bringing the StarScan when i get my hands on it. It can diagnose problems and read every bit of every system on your car. At the very least it will show if it has thrown any codes and clear them. Like I said, we can play with some settings for miscellaneous stuff, see if it's up to date.

Maybe someone else with an '08 here or on an another Forum would know if there are any TSB's for your car that require a "dealer flash" to fix? Because that's exactly what we are doing here, a "dealer flash". But I need to know the name or version of the file the "flash" requires ahead of time since I won't have any way to connect the StarScan to the internet at the M&G.

BigMike608

I may want to enable my daytime running lights

cadzilla74
11-23-2008, 07:48 AM
No problem Big Mike ... I don't even need a special file for that, it's a standard setting change.

Also, info for all, if we are just going to turn lights on or off or stuff like that there is no reason to "detune to stock" if you have a programmer tune installed. Only if we are going to push new firmware updates to control modules like TCM, ECM or PCM will a "set back to stock" be required first.

cadzilla74
11-23-2008, 07:51 AM
Also, to all, please don't be shy. I like doing this for the Club whenever I can and my memory sucks in my old age ... so if you see me wandering around with the StarScan and you want me to hook it up to your car please don't hesitate to remind me ... I missed a few folks at the park this past summer because I forgot where y'all were parked.

Flash of the FCM front control module should fix the speedo reading 0 issue ...

Chris, the airbag light is also fixed by the StarScan but unfortunately the dealer has a set of weights that must be positioned on the seat to reset the trigger which I don't have ... also, you may have a bad clockspring weight sensor under the seat causing the problem, the StarScan will detect if that is the issue but will not repair it.

I am aware there is a hack for the video in motion out there ... I've never seen a way to alter it via StarScan ... if you know someone that can point me to the right menu and settings I have no problem setting any car to any setting the tool is capable of providing. LOL, yeah that makes one curious
It is my understanding the video in motion has to be set to NO by law in certain states while others allow it to be unset.
Dealers, as I am told must set it before selling cars in Texas. But honestly I do not know the menus well enough to direct anyone to them.
Lockpic is an after market solution, and what I planned to use.

Front seat video enable/disable Due to certain state regulations, a function for disabling the front seat video option has been incorporated into the vehicle as a running change. This function will enable or disable the radios ability to play video in the front seat. OK first post updated. I reread all the posts. I think I have all the models and years covered for TCM and ECM updates. If you don't see yours please remind me of model and year of your car. This is ONLY necessary for TCM and ECM updates.

All other changes like fog lights, daytime driving lights, NAV hack, EVIC and FCM updates do not require model-specific or special files so I've got all that covered. One "tiny" thing ... I caught wind in the StarScan Forum over on LX Forums that the newest version of the basic StarScan operating system has removed "fogs on with high beams" as a menu option. I cannot confirm this at this time. I also haven't had the unit I'm bringing in my hands for a while and I do not know if it has been updated to te latest OS version. If it hasn't then we are good to go. If it has I will still check the FCM light control menu to see if it's really gone or not.

UPDATE ... and apology ... I have all the files needed for everyone downloaded and saved on the thumb-drive .... that's the good news ...

The bad news is, due to an illness in the family Brad was not able to get up to Tulsa this past week for his usual visit and so I don't have the StarScan and I will not be able to bring it to the Toys for Tots meet ...

I will get it as soon as I can and I'll let everyone know as soon as possible when I can bring it to a Thursday night meet. Unfortunately, with the holidays, this will mean I won't be around until after Christmas for a group meeting since I have to work on 12/18 and then 12/25 is Christmas and then New Year's Day follows that.

So it looks like after Jan 1 before I can bring the unit to a group meet and fix everyone up ... please accept my apologies and if the situation changes I'll post it as soon as I know a change in availability ...

Its cool Art. You think I could get the dealership to do the PCM and TCM flash without charging me an arm and a leg?

cadzilla74
12-12-2008, 12:31 PM
Camo, I think they charge for an hour's worth of time to hook you up at the dealer so around $125 ... the problem is, they won't force a flash on your car like I will, they will just hook up your car and see if any "recommended" flashes show up ... that is not necessarily what you want ... for instance on my '05 Magnum I'm running the newest '08 PCM and TCM updates but they never showed up as updates for my car, I had to manually force the updates in ... I doubt the dealer will do that.

Sandy, it's just a matter of Brad going up to Tulsa to visit his family which he does every other week, but he didn't go last week so no StarScan. He's been trying to sell it and it's kind of on "long term loan" to a buddy of his up there who uses it at his shop. He'll get it the next time he goes for a visit and I'll be able to borrow it then.

you may be right, someone pointed me to that resource when I was looking for a way to get it unlocked.
I suppose if you try it and it dont work no big deal.
The way it was explained to me was that in states where it is not illegal you can actually watch video in motion. In states where it is not, they have to turn it off in vehicle prep by law.
Those instructions undo dealer prep.
The wording could lead one to support either view. Ill be the test subject
